| | ISF Celebrates Success of Nourish Every Mind 2008 | Live Bluegrass music and heartfelt testimonials from ISF grant recipients highlighted an inspirational Nourish Every Mind Benefit Luncheon on Thursday, October 16th at the Issaquah Community Center. The 11th annual event attracted 850 parents, business and civic leaders and generated $324,000 to fund programs that support the foundation's core focus areas of academic enrichment, struggling students and professional development. "We are grateful for people's extraordinary generosity, given this difficult economic time," said Executive Director Robin Callahan. Callahan and Event Co-Chairs Elizabeth Brown and Leslie Patten were also pleased with the number of new faces in the audience, noting that one of the Luncheon's goals is to spread the word about the foundation's goals and accomplishments. Event Recap Nourish Every Mind began at Noon with a quartet of students singing the Star Spangled Banner. Master of Ceremonies Pat Cashman kicked off the program on a hilarious note then passed the baton to ISF Board President Eve Martine, who presented the Corporate Golden Apple to John Murphy, Chairman of the Overlake Advisory Board. Martine returned to the podium to remind guests of the reason all were assembled--a shared passion to provide students with the best possible education. Newcastle Elementary Music Teacher and Kateri Brow Big Idea/Biggest Need Grant Recipient, Robin Wood brought her students to the stage for a 'show and tell' about their Personal Extension through Bluegrass and Folk Arts project. The year-long project infused the study of Bluegrass and Folk Arts into every aspect of learning, at all grade levels. More than one of Wood's students related that the project helped them become excited about learning new math concepts. Issaquah High School Physics teacher Tom Haff and his students were also a hit. Haff received a Kateri Brow Grant to replace aging science lab equipment needed to study circular motion. His old equipment, which had been cobbled together from garage sale finds, literally erupted in flames during class. Haff spoke of the tremendous asset the community and nation, has in today's students. "If you would like to see excellence in public education, visit my classroom at Issaquah High School," exclaimed Haff. "I would put my students against any student from New York to Munich to Tokyo, anytime. My students are absolutely bright young people who are going to make this world a better place." York Baur, Past ISF Board President and current Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer of the TAS Group, closed the afternoon by emphasizing that education is an investment with guaranteed dividends. Every dollar we contribute to our students' education today helps to secure a brighter tomorrow for us all.
