January 2009
Happy New Year!
 Teacher and Student
This year, ISF resolves to continue working to fund programs and initiatives that advance academic achievement, support struggling students and promote professional development. Expansion of Project GLAD, a program you helped fund in 2008, will be key to our ability to uphold our pledge. Please read about the project's success below then resolve to make educational improvement a top priority by joining us in for a special fundraising campaign.

Thank you and have a great 2009!
Project GLAD's Success Leads to Demand for More
165 Teachers
5,000 Students
24 Schools

That's the impact that the community's Calling for Kids donations have had on our schools since May, 2008.

In January of 2008, ISF responded to the Issaquah School District's request to collaborate on funding of GLAD- a powerful 'best-practices' professional development program designed to help our teachers reach students more effectively and help every one of them excel. With revenue from the Calling for Kids campaign, the District was able to host 13 GLAD training sessions and workshops, mentor GLAD Grads and even incorporate GLAD practices into the Microsoft Middle School Math program.

Results have exceeded expectations. Elementary school teachers across the District are applauding GLAD and its effect on their classrooms. Over 95% of staff who participated in GLAD indicate that the training made a dramatic difference in their teaching practices.  They report that students are attentive and eager to learn about math and science-subjects that are challenging, yet vital to our children's ability to thrive in today's competitive, technologically advanced society.

GLAD success at the elementary level has spurred demand for training at middle and high schools. The District has responded by creating a modified version of GLAD for secondary instructors. Maywood Middle School is in the midst of staff immersion training that includes coaching, mini-workshops and even webinars.  Pine Lake, Issaquah Middle and the High Schools will soon follow suit.

On February 11th, ISF will conduct a special one-night only phone-a-thon to past donors to help sustain this pivotal professional development program.  With community assistance, the District will be able to complete its goals of training over 100 additional teachers in GLAD, immersing an entire elementary and secondary school in GLAD practices, holding GLAD induction classes for new teachers and providing GLAD coaches and Stage 2 workshops so that staff can retain and improve upon the valuable lessons learned during their initial GLAD training.

ISF Wish List -- Office Space
The Issaquah Schools Foundation is desperately seeking office space. We've outgrown our current 180 sq. ft. home and are looking for new digs. We are in search of an Issaquah building owner or property manager looking to fill a minimum one-year lease on 250 sq. ft. or more of office space. The donation would make a great tax write off.  Please call or email Robin Callahan, ISF Executive Director at 425-416-2045, rcallahan@issaquahschoolsfoundation.org with offers or recommendations. Thank you!

P.S. - We're also seeking the use of a portable copier for one month.

The Issaquah Schools Foundation is a 21-year old organization that drives resources to help students reach the promise of their academic potential.

We fund programs that encourage academic achievement, support struggling students and promote professional development.
