Scholarships

The Ruth Roy Scholarship Fund

“Highly capable students enjoy learning in a unique way. They need opportunities to study topics at a faster rate, more in-depth and to think out-of-the-box. Imagine the bliss of a summer when they get to pursue personal passions. That is the goal of my scholarship.”

Ruth Roy

Application Deadline: February 22, 2010

The inspiration:

In honor of her career in teaching gifted students in the Issaquah School District, the Ruth Roy Scholarship Fund has been established to support highly capable students in their constant curiosity and quest for knowledge.

Ruth Roy’s ability to inspire and challenge students to go beyond the expected standards and to develop a passion for learning has made a difference in the lives of many of her students. Her greatest joy was to find solutions for highly capable students who have encountered difficulties, either academically or personally, and to nurture their individual approaches to learning.

The purpose:

The scholarship will assist post fifth-to-seventh grade students to pursue academic or intellectual interests beyond what is currently available to him/her in the regular school program. The scholarship is designed to encourage highly capable students to seek additional challenge and find new areas to explore on their own.

The applicant:

Any student in the Issaquah School District who is either identified gifted or is highly motivated with a strong academic achievement record may apply the summer after his/her fifth-grade year through the summer before the eighth-grade year. Students who can show they have overcome adversity in becoming successful in school are especially encouraged to apply.

The application:

In January of each school year, scholarship information will be sent to all fifth-grade SAGE and MERLIN teachers, elementary and middle school principals, and counselors for distribution to students. Students will be required to write their most convincing essay which should be about their academic experiences and their plan for how to use the scholarship. The application information will suggest online resources for students to consider, or students may find their own study programs.

The award:

The scholarship winners will be determined by the Roy family, along with a small group of teachers, parents and others who are familiar with student achievement and expectations. The award will be given before the end of the school year by a check paid directly to the family of the student. More than one scholarship may be given in each year, depending upon available resources. Awards will be approximately $350 per student. The award will be funded by contributions from anyone who wishes to honor Mrs. Roy and her work with highly capable students.

Where can we contribute to the scholarship fund?

The account for the scholarship fund is administered through the Issaquah Schools Foundation (ISF) which is a 501 (c) (3) agency. Checks payable to: Ruth Roy Scholarship Fund may be sent to ISF, PO Box 835, Issaquah, WA 98027 .

Suggestions for student summer program exploration:

The following websites advertise special summer programs for students and can start students thinking about something they might like to explore.

Students are also encouraged to create a Google description of something they’d like to explore and see where it takes them. Or create a study program with a mentor, define a problem to solve, outline a series of experiments to perform, or….the sky’s the limit!

University of Washington Robinson Center for Young Scholars - Ruth Roy Scholarship Matching Award

The Center for Young Scholars at the University of Washington has also established a Ruth Roy Scholarship.  It is designed to match the Issaquah Ruth Roy Scholarship award toward tuition in either the Summer Stretch or Summer Challenge programs.

Students who are interested in receiving the Issaquah scholarship and the UW match should review the requirements online for the UW programs and submit their application for the Issaquah award first.  If they receive the Issaquah scholarship, they will then be able to notify the UW Robinson program that they are the Issaquah recipient and receive the additional UW Ruth Roy Scholarship toward the full tuition payment.  The two scholarships together may not fully cover the cost of the summer program, leaving a small amount for the family to cover in addition.

Students may select other programs and still qualify for the Issaquah Ruth Roy Scholarship, but the matching tuition grant does not apply to any program other than the UW Robinson Center courses.
